A Parsons chair is a special type of upholstered dining chair. The name has nothing to do with the clergy. The chair was named for its origin – which was created in Paris in the 1930s by a famous designer at Parsons School of Design.
In the chair design, designers do not radically reinvent the Parsons School the idea of the chair (like, say, the Bauhaus did in Germany). Instead, designers streamlined historical influences, kept what worked, resulting no, and created an enduring modern classic.
The main features of the chair of Parsons – modernist features of its naturalism, simplicity and the look linear – are classics, but reflects the style of 1800 of the Mission and Arts and Crafts style, Art Nouveau styles that emerged later, and the Art Deco that was contemporaneous with when designing the chair of Parsons. The simplicity of the chair fits these styles and a variety of the other, both classical and modern.
Originally, President Parsons was intended to be used in conjunction with the Parsons table, as reflecting a linear look like aesthetic in the matching chair. However, in some of irony, the simplicity of both has led them to be adapted separately in many styles of furniture and decoration. The result? Today, they are rarely seen together. The Parsons' style is so adaptable to many owners of a table or chair of parish priests have no idea that there are pieces of accessories.
President Parsons is almost always crafted from wood and has a slight curve, square-back and legs. They are usually highlighted with upholstery covers which completely covers the legs and gives the chair of a solid, monumental appearance. This cover is optional or absent in many recent models.
Today most of the pastors chairs are direct clones of the original design of the Parsons School. However, many recent variations exist, including versions with cabriole legs, Chippendale influence designs designs shorter or taller, and versions with arms, more or less inspired versions of Art Nouveau or Art Deco, and so on. The design Parsons School original was leather upholstery, and this is still a popular upholstery option, although microfabrics are increasingly used. The wide variety of choices of available today should make sure that you will be able to find one that is right for you.
Because of its simplicity, convenience and ease of cleaning, Parsons chair remains ever popular, especially in restaurants. In fact, you can now enjoy your own, and not realizing what it is. We hope that the knowledge of the story of this chair should deepen their appreciation for this unique design.
